Public policy is about the manner in which the government and its agencies plan, design, implement, and monitor their programs. In order to apply for government funding or to receive grants, proposals, loans, and more; a proposal is often needed to provide supporting data. The majority of non-academic writers will probably not be able to meet the required standards for an essay, so they simply try to write around the outline or a framework.
When an individual works as a public policy writer, they must be prepared to do both. Most writers, however, lack the expertise, skills, and training to achieve success with both of these goals. Essay topics are typically written in a policy analysis format. This type of writing focuses on analyzing existing laws and policies that affect the government and offers a suggested solution to the problems created by those policies. Writers who want to offer a viable solution to the problems that they outline in their essays must use their own original insight, and be able to present their ideas in such a way that they are comprehensible to readers. Writing essays on public policy topics is a matter of determining what the topic actually is. This means determining whether or not the topic is relevant to the policy itself. If the subject matter is not a focus of the policy, then the writer must start their essay with a broad topic and then narrow it down to its specific focus at the end. Usually, policy writers are given a specific topic to work on, but they can get information about the actual topic by reading the existing literature or engaging in research. Then they can begin writing. Policy writers must be able to do one of two things: Analyze the literature to see what people have discovered, or write the essay based on the knowledge that they gain. The second option is called topical analysis. Although this type of writing is more difficult than other forms of essay writing, it is very effective at drawing the reader into the topic, which is important in essay topics. Readers are drawn in by the examples and begin forming opinions on the topic as soon as the essays begins. These are the main differences between essay topics and academic research. Policy essay topics will generally require extensive research into the topic, but the research will be analyzed and presented in an original manner. Academic research is only useful when the research is directly relevant to the topic, and there is a way to relate that research to the topic.
